Deciding What to Design The most important thing to consider when designing your garden is how you use the space now and how you might want to use it in the future. You may want a play-area for the kids, or perhaps a dining area to entertain friends – whatever feature you want in your garden, now is the time to plan it into your final design. Another good starting-point is to consider if you want your garden to reflect a style or theme. There are many different styles to choose from: formal, informal, traditional, country, contemporary or minimalist. Themes can include colour or shape; let your garden show your style. It is wise to give some thought to whether the garden design fits with the style of your property. A modern home may not suit a cottage garden and, similarly, a more rural style of property may not complement a totally contemporary garden. If you need more inspiration, great places to look are magazines, the internet, television makeover shows or simply just around you. Remember, your design will also depend on how much time you have to maintain your garden, so though it may look good in the magazine, it might not be right for you.
